Winter Contingency

Noble Team on Reach

The exact reason why ONI sent this team in particular to investigate what appeared to be a small terrorist incident remains questionable. It could be argued that with Reach being the biggest military centre and last defence protecting the Inner Colonies and Earth along with the single biggest UNSC deployment in the galaxy that maybe ONI wasn’t going to waste time with Insurrectionists so they sent their best team to quickly deal with the situation. It seems as if ONI over-reacted to the incident or maybe there was something else. Something ONI had anticipated.

Far away from Reach and about sixteen years beforehand the first alliance between Humans and an alien species was formed. Within a series of hollowed out and manned asteroids known as The Rubble both humans Insurrectionists and Kig-yar, the almost bird-like humanoids from the Covenant known commonly as Jackals, co-existed together under an uneasy peace. Although the Kig-yar and Insurrectionist alliance didn’t survive the events that transpired at The Rubble, the possibility remained open for future alliances as both forces opposed the UNSC and both forces also believed they could use one another to further their own goals.

The temptation of an alliance with the Covenant must have been strong for the Insurrectionists. The powerful enemy of the UNSC had the technological advantage over their opponents, technology that the Insurrectionists could use themselves to further to their own goals. More importantly, it was clear that the UNSC was faltering, the victories against the Covenant were few and far between and one by one UNSC worlds were falling, by siding with the Covenant the Insurrectionists may have hoped to survive the war by taking the winner’s side early. The Insurrectionists possessed something the Covenant wanted badly – information regarding UNSC settlements and military targets. The Insurrectionists had been fighting with UNSC long before the Covenant had glassed its first UNSC world and they had decades to build up intelligence against their mutual enemy.

As Noble Team discovered that the Covenant were responsible for sabotaging the main communication array on Reach, the possibility that the Covenant used Insurrectionist intelligence to sneak under the watchful glare of the UNSC force remains.

Winter Contingency had been declared. A long and everlasting winter that would forever settle across Reach’s surface. The vibrant rolling green country hills and the bustling cities would be buried for all time under a sheet of ice-like glass and the hushed voices of hundreds of millions of lives singing a silent song of death. The truth lies still and serene under a glassy cover.

Great article, this could be the start of something big! A word of advice, though; make sure to proofread your work and check your grammar. Watch where your flinging those apostrophes! Otherwise fantastic work, I eagerly await your next article!

As a user previously stated, watch out with your grammar and spelling. Granted, it is a rather long entry and errors are bound to come up. It was a really good read though! I’ll definitely be coming back to check up on it.

An interesting thread, that alliance from The Cole Protocol… I’m not sure it would turn up again, let alone in Reach. I always found it a tad contrived, but then again the Jackals are the one species in the Covenant I’m sure would be willing to do so, and the hardcore Insurrectionists proved they would do anything for their “freedom” from the UNSC.

Fairly good article, but you kind of missed a huge portion of Reach’s history; the Insurrection which took place in it’s system, was one of the most violent fronts of the whole rebellion. Epsilon Eriadanius was a focal point in the whole TREBUCHET campaign; its kind of a big thing to leave it out.

Nice brief history and summary of the introduction of reach. This website for me is up among Halopedia and even Bungie itself perhaps. Well Done!

This is very good, but you are basing a lot of this off of conjecture. If I recall correctly, Reach was terraformed, not a lush Eden. And it is implied that the inner colonies were not agricultural worlds, a role that was fulfilled by such colonies as Harvest.

At Max. If your going to complain maybe you should write your own blog on the halo universe… I doubt someone like you could write a decent six page article as an INTRODUCTION to a planet. But, I’m just saying…
